Consumer Guidelines for Choosing a Roofing Contractor

This video from our friends at the National Roofing Contractors Association gives you a few things to look for if you are searching for a roofer to work with.

"A roofing system is one of the most important components of your home or place of business, and purchasing a roof is one of the most important investments you can make.  
To make an educated decision in choosing a roofing company, use these guidelines:

1. Look for a roofing contractor who has a documented permanent place of business, telephone number, tax identification number and where required a business license.
2. Ask to see copies of the contractors liability insurance coverage, workers compensation certificates and make sure all coverage is in effect through the duration of time they will be working on your home.
3. Make sure they have a proven track record that readily offers client references and a list of completed projects.  If you can, call those references to get their feedback.
4. Make sure you get a written proposal and examine it for complete descriptions of the work and specifications including approximate starting and completion dates and payment procedures.
5. Call the better business bureau to check for any complaints that may have been filed against them.
6. Make sure they explain the project supervision and quality control procedures and get the name of the person who will be in charge of the project how many workers and an estimation of the time it will take.
7. Have them carefully go through any roofing warranty offered with you and watch for provisions that would void it.
8. Always keep a healthy skepticism about the lowest bid, many times if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.  Professionalism and quality workmanship should always weigh heavily on whom you award your project to.
9. Check to see whether the contractor is a member of any local state regional or national roofing industry associations such as the NRCA
